Word came to me just now, that my childhood friend and basketball buddy René „PiWi“ Pradella passed away. We played tons of streetball back in the day the term streetball wasn’t mainstream yet, we ruled the courts, the streets and clubs, we partied hard and enjoyed life in the Ruhrpott, our concrete jungle, our home. PiWi never changed he stayed young at heart and now died way to early.
Funeral will be held on Friday, time and place I don’t know yet, but I will make it.

Hey do you use usb flash drives? Or other removable memory devices like SD-cards or something? Do you encrypt them!? Well I do encrypt mine, mainly because I can. Just in case I lose it, I have a small non encrypted partition on it, with my contact data and the main large data partition encrypted with LUKS. Works like a charm, lovin‘ it, there are even free Windows tools for it. But hey, this is not what this is about, what this is about is me being an ol‘ lazy dog with bad, bad habits. heard of the Apache HTTP Header Range DoS Attack, maybe been a victim of it already! Michal Zalewski described that vulnerability some years ago and now or maybe some time already there are simple scripts out in the wild, which can be used to nuke apache servers. Funnily Heise.de calls it a „so far unkown bug“. Well, until there will be a fix, here is a workaround to protect your site using Mod_Rewrite to block HTTP RANGE Requests, add these lines to your .htaccess:
RewriteEngine On
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_METHOD} ^(HEAD|GET) [NC]
RewriteCond %{HTTP:Range} ([0-9]*-[0-9]*)(\s*,\s*[0-9]*-[0-9]*)+
RewriteRule .* - [F]
ATTN: If the first line: RewriteEngine On is already in your .htaccess, add only the next three lines.

Happy Independence Day (July, 4th) everyone!
MySQL tables which have to endure lots of delete operations tend to become fragmented and blow up out of proportions. The cure to this is „OPTIMIZE TABLE <table_name>„, which can be easily done in phpmyadmin under the operation tab. But what if you do not want to log in to the phpmyadmin webinterface all the time and want to optimize tables before you do something with ‚em, like backing ‚em up, what if you want to optimize table from the commandline?
